A few weeks back I talked about job search strategies and the in-class assignment I used to introduce students to fashion related job search websites. I said I would post the list of sites they discovered and here it is today. They found 24 job posting sites with a fashion focus. None of these sites are single employer sites and they all include positions around the county (and a few sites from the UK thanks to a student from London). They researched 1/2 the sites for types of jobs and access information. That is also included below. Share these with your students – use them yourself! The right job is out there for everybody and I hope this information helps students find what they’re looking for.

Job Description
Reporting to the Collections Management Supervisor and working closely with the Costume & Textiles Department Head, the Collections Administrator is responsible for the organization, care, storage and movement of the Costume & Textiles department’s collection, including permanent collection, study and archival.

Job Description
The Museum of the City of New York embraces the past, present, and future of New York City and celebrates the city’s heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. It does so through a lively schedule of exhibitions, public and school programs, publications, and collections.
The Museum is looking for an individual to fill the position of Assistant Registrar. In addition to the documentation and management of the museum’s broad-ranging collection that includes decorative arts, paintings, photography, theater, costumes and textiles, the primary responsibility will concern the department’s role in temporary exhibitions. He or she will be responsible for maintaining records, developing condition reportsfor incoming loan, maintain, update the location of objects, and work with collegially with all members of the exhibition team. Job Requirements
- Coordinate all aspects of short-term incoming exhibition loans including electronic tracking, loan forms, contracts, condition reports, invoices for fees and vendors, correspondence, scheduling transport, object preparation, packing, and couriering.
- Up-date Facility Report as needed to reflect construction phases.
- Work with curatorial staff and Exhibition Coordinator to ensure display requirements are met for all exhibition loans.
- Manage/ coordinate gallery activity during object installation and de-installation in regard to loaned art objects and couriers.
- Create and track budgets for exhibition object related costs.
- When needed, assist curatorial staff and registrars with cataloguing the collection used for in house exhibitions.
- Coordinate and assist with the transportation of objects to and from the Museum’s off-site storage facility, including scheduling of packing and shipments; schedule and provide access to off-site collections for Museum staff, researchers, conservators, photographers, and others.
- Act as a liaison between the Collections Management Department and all other departments in the Museum, such as Education and Special Events, as required.
- Assist the Chief Registrar and the Department of Collections Management in other duties as needed.
Requirement:
- Bachelor’s degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Master’s degree in Museum Studies, American History or Art History preferred
- Minimum 1-3 years experience in a cultural institution, preferably in an art and or history museum with a strong exhibitions and loan program.
- Experience working with national and international art packing and transportation methods conforming to insurance and legal regulations.
- Must have the ability to successfully manage more than one active project concurrently, independently and with a team; detail oriented.
- Experience documenting collections in a collections management database system.

Position Description: The Cotsen Family Office is seeking an experienced candidate to join its close-knit team in the full-time position of Curator for The Lloyd Cotsen Collections. Current holdings comprise close to 7,000 objects – primarily textiles as well as folk art, Asian baskets, archaeological objects and a variety of non-traditional pieces. Our objective is to continue having the collections accessible to museums and to the academic world.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an understanding of the collections and knowledge of the cultures that produced the objects as well as the materials of which they are constructed.
- Monitor auction and gallery activity, have a comprehensive understanding of the current and historic value of relevant art objects.
- Create and maintain displays in two gallery spaces and corporate headquarters.
- Advise on conservation treatments, mounting, framing.

- Share traditional curatorial responsibilities with a few other art staff.
Position Requirements:
- Masters degree in art history, anthropology, archaeology or a related field with a focus on Asia, North America, Oceania and/or Africa. Coursework in anthropology and archaeology.
- Minimum seven years of professional experience in a curatorial role and experience with current provenance research procedures and customs guidelines and restrictions.
- Experience researching, cataloguing, and handling ethnographic materials, particularly textiles, in a museum and/or gallery and/or private collection.
- Experience working with auction houses and art dealers.
- Some conservation training preferred. Must feel comfortable handling ancient and fragile materials as well as contemporary works.
- Hands-on experience with the usual range of installation planning issues, including knowledge of appropriate installation methods and security measures.

The College seeks an outstanding and accomplished artist with a strong conceptual and historical understanding of fiber media in a fine arts context including current innovations in the Fiber and Experimental Fashion fields. The studio artist/ educator will teach eighteen credits per year (three courses per semester) at an art school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and the importance of the fine arts. The candidate will be capable of teaching all levels of the undergraduate program, be proficient in traditional techniques as well as new approaches to the fiber medium – with a specialty in project management skills. As faculty in a Fiber program, the candidate should have a broad understanding of the fiber practice and be knowledgeable of contemporary art issues and theory. The candidate should have the ability to integrate theoretical, material, practical and social issues into fiber studio pedagogy. Some administrative experience will be valued, and a willingness to potentially serve in the future in a rotating Chair position.

A facility in translating these techniques into formal expressive language should be integrated into curricula. A demonstrated ability to organize and oversee group projects and events is essential. Also, as faculty in MICA’s Fiber program, an understanding of fiber practice should reflect knowledge of contemporary art issues and theory and studio pedagogy should integrate material, practical and social issues. Some administrative experience will be valued.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts seeks a dynamic and versatile textile specialist with a broad interest and experience, and a keen interest to interpret textiles within the wider context of the decorative arts. This position will report to the Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture. The Assistant or Associate Curator of Textiles will be held responsible for the overall care of this collection and its consistent upgrade through a process of careful adding and considerate deaccessioning. Position Requirements: Master’s degree (Ph.D. strongly preferred). Strong record of research and scholarship, with proven experience in organizing loan exhibitions and authoring significant publications. Lecturer Position in Fashion Design
Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design

Position Description:
Position Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach an annual course load of six, three credit courses during the 10-month academic year; specific courses to be determined based on candidate’s academic/creative specialty.
- Participate in substantial faculty service efforts, as assigned by Chair, including involvement with student extra-curricular organizations and departmental committees.

Position Requirements:
The successful candidate will have:
- At least one degree in fashion design or apparel merchandising. Exceptional candidates in other fields will be considered as well. A graduate degree is highly desirable.
- A portfolio of relevant creative and technical design work. The portfolio should demonstrate most of the following skills: fashion illustration, proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, CAD for fashion/portfolio design, technical design work, and apparel design through draping. A sample of the design process taken from conception to execution would be ideal.
- A minimum of two years teaching experience in an apparel-related program or relevant industry experience. He or she will have a demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of constituents including students, faculty, university administrators, alumni, and representative from industry.

Additional Information: The Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design http://iub.edu/~amid is seeking a highly qualified educator with significant experience in fashion design to fill a Lecturer position, for an initial appointment of three year beginning fall 2011, at Indiana University’s main campus in Bloomington. This position offers an opportunity to join a growing fashion design program which is enhanced by the renowned 24,000 piece Sage Collection of fashion which is used for research, exhibition, and classroom teaching.
