Call for Book Chapters: Mapping Sustainable Fashion: Global Perspectives

Submission guidelines: The editors invite interested authors to submit by email (in English in a Word file format) an abstract of approximately 300-500 words that sets out the key points to be discussed in the essay or spotlight case study. Deadline: 25th July 2016. Upon acceptance of the abstract all full submissions will be due in early 2017. Abstracts should include the title of the paper, the author(s)’s name, affiliation, email address, and a bio (200 words), and be emailed to the regional editor:

In the 21st Century sustainable fashion can be found in retail markets around the world. Once regarded as a niche product line, today renowned fashion brands such as Stella McCartney, H&M, and People Tree are using environmentally friendly fabrics and/or ethical production processes in their products. Although international fashion brands have helped to raise awareness to sustainable fashion, Mapping Sustainable Fashion: Global Perspectives will be the first book to bring together and explore the evolution of sustainable fashion in different communities, countries and continents. At a time when the global fashion industry is being encouraged to reduce the impacts associated with fashion production and consumption, this text intends to chart the many varied environmental, ethical, social and economic aspects that have shaped the development of sustainable fashion in different nations.

Truly international in its perspective, the book is organized into six continents – The Americas, Europe, Middle East, South East Asia, Western Pacific and Africa. Each section will contain regional essays that explore and debate the development of sustainable fashion in the context of specific domestic economic, cultural, environmental and ethical goals and concerns. Regional ‘Spotlight’ case studies will serve to highlight differences and similarities across regions by concentrating on examples of best practice, design innovation and impact in the community. They introduce and explore, for example, cross-national initiatives, the work of NGOs and activist groups, and fashion brands and companies working in new and emerging markets. The book will be further enhanced with an online mapping project, which will be populated with local, regional and international sustainable fashion trails relevant to, for example, the business-to-business sector, consumer markets, and research / activist communities. The editors now seek contributions from authors (from academia, business, design, NGOs) from around the world to contribute to this new, exciting publication.

The six book sections include essays (each of 3,000-4,000 words) and smaller ‘Spotlight’ sections (each of 800 words).

An essay must explore some of the following: introduction to the domestic fashion industry and highlight some of the key ethical and environmental issues arising from production / consumption in the region; the rise / development of domestic sustainable fashion; impact in retail markets; consumer perspectives; present popular domestic sustainable brands and companies, and approaches used to design, produce and promote sustainable fashion; discuss role of activist and/or grassroots movements; supportive industry bodies and/or government initiatives; future opportunities.

A ‘spotlight’ case study will allow for smaller individual case studies that, for example, may focus on new brands in emerging markets, or specific sustainable strategies that are widely used in a region, or initiatives that run across nations in a specific region.
