Anarchists of Style: Cher (A Snapshot)

For more than 40 years, audiences have wowed, gasped, and often shaken their heads over Cher’s almost unnaturally perfect physique, exposed in sheer, sparkling, barely-there Bob Mackie ensembles. As a presenter at the 1986 Academy Awards, wearing a bit of bondage-inspired fun and a huge feathered Mohawk headdress, she teased a stunned audience, As you can see, I did receive my Academy booklet on how to dress like a serious actress.”

Of her style and success, she surmises: Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.” It’s liberating advice from an icon of fashion anarchy.
