Washington State University has an upcoming exhibit on the textile work of Alfred Shaheen, an American textile designer who brought the beauty and craftsmanship of Hawai’ian textile arts to the attention of the world. Heather did a wonderful review of the exhibit when it was at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles last year. Another great review of the exhibit is up on the Vintage Denise Brain blog complete with photographs.

This obscure but innovative designer even provided the distinctive red Hawai’ian shirt worn by Elvis on the cover of his 1961 album, Blue Hawaii, but despite his design house still existing his name is fairly unknown.

Are there any other textile (or clothing) designers that we should be made aware of?
