Position Description: Full-time.  The High Museum of Art seeks a dynamic curator of decorative arts and design. The High possesses one of the preeminent collections of 19th-century American decorative arts and would like to continue the expansion of its collections and exhibitions program into the 20th and 21st centuries. The ideal candidate will be energetic and a team player, with strong relationship building skills at the local, national, and international level, and will have the flexibility and experience to develop and manage a variety of focus, monographic, and major thematic exhibition projects. He/she needs to work effectively with patrons to generate excitement and substantial funds for acquisitions. The candidate will also possess strong connoisseurship skills, scholarly expertise, and collections development experience. He/she will need to work effectively with colleagues in overlapping areas of interest and expertise, especially American and modern and contemporary art. The position requires at least five years of museum experience. A PhD. is preferred; an M.A. is required.

Education/Experience:

·         Minimum of a Master’s degree in art history and three to five years experience in a curatorial position.

·         Ph.D. highly desirable.

Language Skills:

  • Reading and speaking skills in one or more foreign languages highly desirable.
  • Must possess superior written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information to the museum staff and Board of Directors.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals and other publications, catalogues and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to develop and maintain departmental budgets.
  • Ability to present information in report form.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to solve problems and prioritize needs in a variety of situations where immediate decisions may be necessary.
