Position Description: The Cotsen Family Office is seeking an experienced candidate to join its close-knit team in the full-time position of Curator for The Lloyd Cotsen Collections. Current holdings comprise close to 7,000 objects – primarily textiles as well as folk art, Asian baskets, archaeological objects and a variety of non-traditional pieces.  Our objective is to continue having the collections accessible to museums and to the academic world.


  • Maintain an understanding of the collections and knowledge of the cultures that produced the objects as well as the materials of which they are constructed.
  • Monitor auction and gallery activity, have a comprehensive understanding of the current and historic value of relevant art objects.
  • Create and maintain displays in two gallery spaces and corporate headquarters.
  • Advise on conservation treatments, mounting, framing.
  • Assist in the development of exhibition planning and coordination at outside institutions, including interaction with museum staff on outgoing loans and gifts. Review facilities reports and relevant display standards for borrowing institutions; oversee condition reporting, packing and transportation of loans.
  • Share traditional curatorial responsibilities with a few other art staff.
Position Requirements:

  • Masters degree in art history, anthropology, archaeology or a related field with a focus on Asia, North America, Oceania and/or Africa. Coursework in anthropology and archaeology.
  • Minimum seven years of professional experience in a curatorial role and experience with current provenance research procedures and customs guidelines and restrictions.
  • Experience researching, cataloguing, and handling ethnographic materials, particularly textiles, in a museum and/or gallery and/or private collection.
  • Experience working with auction houses and art dealers.
  • Some conservation training preferred. Must feel comfortable handling ancient and fragile materials as well as contemporary works.
  • Hands-on experience with the usual range of installation planning issues, including knowledge of appropriate installation methods and security measures.
  • Experience with processing outgoing museum loans. Understanding of contractual forms, packing and transit methods, condition reports, environmental restrictions, and display hardware.

Required Skills

  • Superior written and verbal communication, preferably in more than one language
  • Diplomacy and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, SNAP! or collections management software
  • Highly-organized and detail-oriented
  • Must enjoy patient team working conditions
