Position Description: Full-time. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts seeks a dynamic and versatile textile specialist with a broad interest and experience, and a keen interest to interpret textiles within the wider context of the decorative arts. This position will report to the Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture. The incumbent will enliven the textile collection through innovative, intellectually rigorous and thought-provoking installations, rotations and exhibitions, with a particular emphasis on the textiles’ stylistic and functional relationship with other art forms. Proficient in cataloging to the highest standards a diverse range of works spanning many different centuries, countries of origin and techniques, the Assistant or Associate Curator of Textiles will research the collection and author publications which will significantly advance the field. The curator will work closely with collectors and prospective donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations and the community in furtherance of the MIA’s strategic goals.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts owns a collection of approximately 10,000 textiles, of which the majority – Mediterranean, European and American textiles from the earliest holdings to the present day – are accessioned with the Department of Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture. The Assistant or Associate Curator of Textiles will be held responsible for the overall care of this collection and its consistent upgrade through a process of careful adding and considerate deaccessioning. The incumbent is expected to implement and oversee an Affinity Group for actual and potential donors and oversee its programming, which will include lectures and travel.

Position Requirements: Master’s degree (Ph.D. strongly preferred). Minimum of one year (for the assistant curator level) and four years (for the associate curator level) curatorial experience in textiles, or in a combined textiles/decorative arts position. Strong record of research and scholarship, with proven experience in organizing loan exhibitions and authoring significant publications. Demonstrated skill at strategically building a collection through gifts and purchases. Team player with proven ability to work effectively and positively with staff, trustees, and all other internal and external contacts. Ability to build positive and effective relationships with donors and the broader community.
