Position description: Full-time, tenure-track position. Teaching assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes at the San Marcos campus and/or off-campus locations as part of contract responsibilities, as well as distance education classes. Full-time faculty are expected to participate fully in departmental activities and college governance and hold regular office hours.

The Assistant Professor, Fashion will provide lecture and laboratory instruction in a variety of topics related to the fashion industry, which may include evaluation of ready-to-wear; analysis and prediction of future trends; textiles; retailing; promotion/advertising including visual merchandising; production of a fashion show; and basic sewing construction. Other responsibilities will include scheduling of courses and coordination of part-time faculty assignments; establishing and maintaining industry partnerships; participation in curriculum development; and working with fashion advisory committees.

Starting salary range: $52,894.65 – $82,751.20 annually. An annual stipend of $1,293.33 shall be paid to any faculty member who has an earned Doctorate. Academic training and teaching experience will form the basis for salary placement. Estimated value of these employer-paid benefits is approximately $22,191 annually. All full-time faculty are enrolled in STRS (State Teachers Retirement System).


Minimum: Must meet one of the sets of qualifications listed under a) through c)*. All candidates must meet qualification d):

a) Bachelor’s in any discipline and two full-time equivalent years of experience.

b) Associate’s in any discipline and six full-time equivalent years of experience.

c) A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of either a) or b) above. Candidates who do not possess the specific minimum qualifications as stated above, which includes degrees that have not been awarded at the time of application, must complete the Equivalency Qualifications Form that is included with the application.

d) Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college.

Preferred: * Bachelor’s degree in a fashion-related discipline and/or technology.

* Prior work experience in a facet of the fashion industry.

* Secondary and/or post-secondary teaching experience.

* Current affiliation with industry associations or other activities that support industry/education partnerships.

* Skill in and/or willingness to learn online teaching skills.

* Commitment to a student learning-centered college.

* Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in fashion and its instructional program, including an awareness and understanding of new developments in fashion-related software and directional trends in the fashion industry.
