Assistant / Associate Professor – Apparel Design and Merchandising

Department of Design and Human Environment

Position Description: Full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position.  Successful candidates will have research/scholarship and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas related to apparel, retail or footwear: functional design, entrepreneurship, consumer behavior, social/corporate responsibility . Salary is competitive and commensurate with education, credentials, and experience. Employee benefits are excellent.

50% Teaching/Advising: Teach 1-2 courses per quarter (5-6 courses per year) including graduate and undergraduate courses in the Apparel Design and/or Merchandising Management programs, curriculum development, innovation in course delivery and design, advising graduate students. 40% Research/Creative Activity: Development/expansion of a nationally recognized scholarly program. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and other publication forms and/or exhibit creative scholarship in juried exhibitions and disseminate scholarly work at professional meetings. 10% Service: Participate actively as a member of the university community and one’s professional community including administrative committees, search committees, and university governance activities.

Qualifications: Requirements for Assistant Professor:

  • Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree for the discipline (i.e., PhD or MFA) by date of employment;
  • Evidence of potential in teaching (both undergraduate and graduate levels) and research/scholarly work;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective university and industry relationships and to contribute to team endeavors;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats;
  • Demonstrated ability to use professional subject-related technology for teaching and/or scholarly work;
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Record of publication/creative activity and/or external funding support;
  • Industry experience or professional practice.

Requirements for Associate Professor:

  • Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree for the discipline (i.e., PhD or MFA);
  • Record of achievement in publication/creative activity and/or external funding support consistent with rank;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective university and industry relationships and to contribute to team endeavors;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats;
  • Demonstrated ability to use professional subject-related technology for teaching and/or scholarly work;
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Industry experience or professional practice;
  • Record of active participation in professional and/or academic organizations.

Additional Information: The Department of Design and Human Environment offers undergraduate programs in Interior Design, Apparel Design, and Merchandising Management and graduate degrees (MA, MS, PhD) in Design and Human Environment. The Department is the only professional program in the western US to offer BS through PhD degrees in these specializations. The Department has approximately 700 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students. The Department’s research/scholarship signature research areas include: 1) functional design in apparel, interiors, and housing and 2) consumer behavior related to the designed environments. The Department works with an Advisory Board whose members include representatives from companies in the interior design, housing, apparel design, and retailing industries. Departmental resources include apparel and interior design studios, computer lab, textile labs, and ethnic/historic textiles and clothing collection.
