Senior Curator of Costume

Position Description: Full-time.

The Senior Curator of Costume assists the Director and Deputy Director in advancing the Museum’s mission by developing the collection, organizing exhibitions, writing Museum publications, and providing leadership for the Costume Department,. The incumbent supervises the staff of the Costume Department, as well as the Textiles and Accessories curators. S/he works collaboratively with other senior staff on all museum-wide initiatives.

Works closely with Director, Deputy Director, and other Museum staff on developing, researching, and organizing exhibitions in both the Fashion History Gallery and the Special Exhibitions Gallery.

Provides leadership for the Costume Department. Supervises staff of Costume Department, interns and student aides. Also supervises the Textiles and Accessories curators.

May write Museum publications including but not limited to Museum books and catalogues, including the Masterpieces book.

Coordinates and project manages Fashion History exhibitions.

Develops, researches, and conducts tours and specialized lectures on fashion to college classes.

Oversees schedule of tours and lectures using the Museum’s collections, and supervises the curatorial staff in the development of such tours and lectures.

Supervises the curatorial staff in the preparation of materials for classes and classroom set ups.

Performs and oversees regular collection maintenance, including assigning object locations in TMS.

Provides information relating to the Museum for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Represents Costume, Accessories, and Textile Departments at Senior Staff meetings.

Works closely with Director, Deputy Director, and other Senior Staff to accomplish the Museum’s Strategic Plan and related initiatives.

Qualifications: Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred, and 3-5 years of appropriate experience writing about fashion, lecturing on fashion, and working on fashion exhibitions. Must have a thorough knowledge of fashion history, including contemporary fashion. Must have excellent writing skills and publication experience. Experience managing personnel. Ability to work well as part of a team, as well as motivating and leading a team. Experience researching and developing exhibitions, writing label and brochure copy, etc. Experience writing and delivering lectures. Experience working with TMS. Experience working in museum costume collections and handling fashion objects in a conservationally sound manner. Must have exceptional organizational and planning skills with a proven ability to pay attention to detail while also to be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously. High level of initiative. Cheerful disposition with a flexible and positive attitude to all aspects of the job.
