Description: The department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is seeking applications  for a tenure track faculty member in Apparel Design (open rank).  The successful candidate will be expected to develop: a scholarly research program in apparel design that encompasses creative, cutting edge apparel design methods/ technologies or innovations in apparel design, and a teaching program in apparel design, with particular attention to the innovative application of the design of technical apparel, that complements the design experience and approaches of current faculty. Responsibilities will include the development of a funding base for scholarly work and advising M.A. and Ph.D. level graduate students and undergraduate students in apparel design. The faculty member will develop and teach undergraduate and graduate apparel design courses in line with the needs of the department, with an emphasis on apparel design studios. Preferred areas of expertise/teaching/research include design of active wear, technical sportswear, knitwear, smart clothing, or functional apparel. Appointment This is a nine-month, tenure track position with 50% research/50% teaching responsibility; rank is open; salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications. Starting date is August, 2011 (negotiable).   The Department The Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design is one of five academic units in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. The graduate field of Fiber Science & Apparel Design offers an M.A./M.S and Ph.D. degrees in Apparel Design or Fiber Science. The undergraduate program offers options in Apparel Design, Fashion Design Management, and Fiber Science. Apparel Design faculty work collaboratively to recruit outstanding students and advance the undergraduate and graduate apparel curriculum. In fall 2011 the department will be housed in a new building. Facilities include well equipped apparel studios with industrial production equipment, a gallery, research laboratories, a 10,000 item costume collection for teaching and research, a laser cutter, and two 3-D Body Scanners. In addition there are department and college CAD facilities with strong technical support and a variety of software, video conferencing facilities in the classrooms, a world renowned library system, advanced computer facilities, and the Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise Program among many other resources.   Application Procedures   Application deadline is January 17, 2011 or when the position is filled. Qualifications: An earned doctorate in apparel or a related field of art/design/product design with a strong emphasis on technology and/or design of the technical apparel product is required. Experience and knowledge of technologies for apparel design and/or the effects of technological developments on the design process are highly desired. Experience in research and/or teaching is preferred to demonstrate professional potential. A clear definition and focus for scholarly work in the area of apparel design must be demonstrated in the CV and personal statement. The candidate must be qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in apparel design. This could involve apparel studio courses or digital design applications across a number of areas, including collaborative teaching endeavors with other apparel design faculty. The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of areas such as new materials or digital tools for apparel design and be able to develop cutting-edge curriculum utilizing these skills.
