It's too bad that you did not find the multiple satires in the musical funny or interesting. The songs about Siberia and the dialog about how commissars came and went under Stalin were quite funny. Maybe you have to have experienced life during the cold war to appreciate them. The spoofing of the film industry, as exemplified by Sterophonic Sound and Josephine numbers, and in particular Astaire spoofing his iconic image and Rock and Roll, I found hilarious. Cole Porter's "All of You" was a very popular song and it delivered with the right level of salaciousness by Astaire (rare for him). Oh well, to each his own. But, it's not really fair to compare Garbo to Charisse, they were birds of a different color, but each had a spectacularly gorgeous plumage.

Tove this is a wonderful subject and I'm glad it interests you. My current work focuses on dress under Communism, particularly in the Czech Republic. I'd love to compare notes and I can't wait to read the article!
