Good article, I enjoyed it. I’d like to add that Michael probably was inspired from star wars as well. I’m thinking of he’s golden outfit from history tour wich remind me a lot of C3P0 (the robot) in star wars. And most of you probably know that star wars was one his favorite movies. I’m sure he was very educated.

Shannon: I’m sorry I seemed to offend you with this article. I thought I was rather level in my treatment of male and female role models for Michael — the whole first half of the post is about men (Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, James Brown, Edward Scissorhands). I don’t know that Michael Jackson was gay or not– which is why I referred to that possibility as a “rumor” — but whatever his sexual orientation, it is undeniable that he played with gender stereotypes, just as many many rock / pop stars play with ideas of sexuality/gender in their appearances (Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Madonna).

The comparisons you made towards the end are a bit bias. There are countless amounts of famous people that you could have chosen to compare him to that are not women. I thought the first comparison with the waves was on the verge of ridiculous.
By the way, Michael took an umbrella with him not as a fashion statement. His skin was sensitive to the sun due to vitiligo… and comparing that to an oriental woman with a traditional umbrella is not legitimate.
Michael Jackson was not gay, and his fashion sense was awesome.

Good post.

I feel I should point out that the reason Michael took to carrying an umbrella around was not to do with fashion but because of his skins sensitivity to the sun as a result of Vitiligo.

Yea ! St. Peppers influence mentioned. Yep, this was Michael. Also, I think that the way he chose to wear his leotard is simply a tribute to dance itself. At least this is my impression. Leotards are traditional & the most comfortable way to dress for mimes & dancers of all styles.

when I consider Michael’s taste, flare & very particular choices for attire, I cannot help but be reminded of the late (though he lives on also), great Freddie Mercury.. Their tastes were both very tactile in nature. They both chose sensual, touchy-feely fabrics; often animalistic fabrics- always uniquely creative. Did you know that Michael used to go see Queen perform a lot and that Michael’s & Freddie’s bdays are 7 days apart ? One day, not too long from now we’ll hear a release of them singing together as per Brian May, lead Queen guitarist.
