Job: British Museum Textiles

I just went to the British Museum last month and it was outstanding. That’s me in the nifty salmon coat. This is probably a great job.

British Museum
Curator of Modern Middle East

Fixed-term for five years
International Candidates Will Be Considered

As Curator of Modern Middle East you will acquire, curate and promote ethnographic and modern material from the Middle East and Central Asia. Specifically this will involve investing the Museum’s existing ancient collections from the Middle East with modern social and political significance, in particular those objects which relate to the development of national identities and regime change throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The role involves taking curatorial responsibility for the existing ethnographic collections from the Middle East and Central Asia, documenting the textile collections from the Middle East and Central Asia archives onto the Merlin database, writing a guide to the textile collections, adding to the collection of modern artefacts including ethnography, commemorative items, material culture of historical significance, posters, photographs and ephemera and participating in collaborative projects between the British Museum and other institutions.

Educated to advanced degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject, you will also have good knowledge of one or more Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Turkish, Persian). It is essential that you have a good knowledge of the modern history and the material culture of the Middle East.
