My team research at CSA

Well over the holiday break I received good news–that my team research on black leather jackets was accepted for oral presentation at the Costume Society of America. I work with Marilyn DeLong, Kelly Gage, and Juyeon Park.

The piece is entitled (I think this is final): Renegade to Regular Joe: Shifting Borders of the Black Leather Jacket.

This is a project we’ve been building on for over a year and a half, surveying bikers about their black leather jacket usage, looking into historical and contemporary imagery, media attention, consumer awareness and interest, and also reviewing the aesthetic qualities. We’re presenting a different section of the work at this year’s Pop Culture/American Culture Association conference entitled (I think this is final): Putting on the Leathers: The Identity of the Black Leather Jacket.

We previously orally presented another portion at last year’s Pop/American Culture and a poster at last year’s Costume Society. Now we’re getting a manuscript together of yet another component of the work. Rarely have I been part of such a productive project which has yielded so much data to work with in so many directions.

Hopefully some of you will be able to attend these presentations but unfortunately I do not think I’ll be there to present/attend. I’ve got a lot of travel commitments this year and had to pick and choose based on budget and time of course.
