The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry

The University of Minnesota (where I go to school) is hosting an event that I do not think I will be able to attend, but, I think sounds pretty worthwhile. My classes are cancelled as my profs will be at the ITAA conference (which I’m skipping as I just spoke at the Pop Culture/American Culture confernece) and since I have free time I’ll be guest lecturing for an undergraduate deisgn course about DIY crafters and my recent research project on the motivations of the modern craft movement.

Anyway…..the even I think sounds worthwhile is: “Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry,” which is the title of a panel discussion and a new book on the issues of the unregulated cosmetics industry.

Here’s what the website says about the event: “Lead in lipstick? Coal tar in shampoo? How is this possible, you ask? Author Stacy Malkan’s new book, Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry (New Society Publishers) uncovers a $35 Billion cosmetics industry that is powerful – and unregulated. Not one cosmetic product has to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before hitting the market. Please join a panel of health, environment, and beauty industry experts for a provocative discussion on Tuesday, November 6 at the University of Minnesota?s Mayo Memorial Auditorium. This special event will begin at 7 pm and is FREE to the general public. To register for this FREE event, please call 612-624-9459 or visit www.csh.umn.edu”

If anyone goes I’d love to hear about it, and I may do my best to get over there and then post about it.

I just realized, you probably know my friend Joyce from Texas! She and I went to grad school together. Small world! 🙂
