A hip scarf or a politcal statement or both or neither……

Since I’m exhausted from way too many projects overlapping, I’ve been sort of reluctant to post anything to Worn Through which I thought needed extra T.L.C., because these days I’m really low on energy and brain power by the time I return home each evening from work/school. However, there are a few topics that have come across my desk or my dinner table which I’ve kept links to, hoping to find time for a thoughtful post.

Well, I don’t really have time, but, I thought why not just start posting them and let you read them and come to your own conclusions, rather than me always going on and on about my thoughts. Particularly when I’m pooped and my thoughts may not make any sense.

One such topic developed after a recent trip to the Gap, in which we found a scarf in their Project Red line, which was stylin’, multifunctional, and had a very “global” type vibe. But, after a discussion of what that all really meant, when packaged into a Gap holiday purchase, it led to a little Internet research by Harlo and he found an article addressing a variation on this issue.

Check out this interview on Orthodox Anarchist to see how this type of discussion is playing out by others. I’ll leave my thoughts to myself for this evening, but I thought I’d bring the issue to the table and encourage you to think about it.

Fashion blog report: Notcouture

I haven’t commented on any sites or blogs lately, and since I’m crazy short on time these days with a ridiculous amount of term papers and research projects, it seems like now would be perfect or a quick post. Check out Notcouture for fabulous Polaroid-style presentation of hip and sophisticated duds that are in a variety of price ranges. It’s a good place for some style inspiration if you’re having a dreary, uninspired day when you look in your closet.

The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry

The University of Minnesota (where I go to school) is hosting an event that I do not think I will be able to attend, but, I think sounds pretty worthwhile. My classes are cancelled as my profs will be at the ITAA conference (which I’m skipping as I just spoke at the Pop Culture/American Culture confernece) and since I have free time I’ll be guest lecturing for an undergraduate deisgn course about DIY crafters and my recent research project on the motivations of the modern craft movement.

Anyway…..the even I think sounds worthwhile is: “Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry,” which is the title of a panel discussion and a new book on the issues of the unregulated cosmetics industry.

Here’s what the website says about the event: “Lead in lipstick? Coal tar in shampoo? How is this possible, you ask? Author Stacy Malkan’s new book, Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry (New Society Publishers) uncovers a $35 Billion cosmetics industry that is powerful – and unregulated. Not one cosmetic product has to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before hitting the market. Please join a panel of health, environment, and beauty industry experts for a provocative discussion on Tuesday, November 6 at the University of Minnesota?s Mayo Memorial Auditorium. This special event will begin at 7 pm and is FREE to the general public. To register for this FREE event, please call 612-624-9459 or visit www.csh.umn.edu”

If anyone goes I’d love to hear about it, and I may do my best to get over there and then post about it.
