In Thailand, it has been announced that delinquent police officers will be made to wear Hello Kitty armbands as a form of punishment. It is thought that not only will they be easily identified because of the bright pink color, but also, the feminine, childlike icon would shame them into shape. Fascinating use of dress as behavior modifier–but I’d be curious to see the results a year from now if those officers actually changed their ways, or, if in some twist the cute kitty got flipped around to become a status symbol of aggression and rebellion. That would be hilarious.

The 2008 national conference for the Pop Culture Association/American Culture Association has been announced for San Fran March 19-22. Their website is a little vague and skeletal, but, it appears that the due date for submissions is Nov 2. There is a “fashion, appearance, and consumer identity” area so I think I’m going to send off a proposal. I’m curious how much overlap (or lack thereof) there is between the attendees at ITAA, CSA, and conferences such as this one with a cultural slant that includes fashion as one component. I really like ITAA, but as it moves more toward retailing and production, cultural scholars like myself are found looking for other avenues.

Harper’s Bazaar’s August issue has the most fun spread in ages–The Simpsons do high fashion! I’ve been seeing the images floating around the web, but, this link not only has the Simpson’s illustrations, but also the styles they are based on. I’m not sure if the original images are in the magazine, or if the livejournal author put it all together-either way-thanx for the laugh riot. I hear the magazine is overrun with requests for prints, and being that most traditional fashion magazines generally only embrace the most tiresome apsects of culture, it’s no surprise everyone wants a georgous picture of Lisa to call their own. It’s a relief to see something light hearted in the oh-so-serious world of high fashion-and equally-it’s fabulous to see our green dressed gal as jazzed up as she deserves to be!

I finished watching Hair World on PBS (mentioned in a previous post) and it really was a fun little show looking into a type of dress related activity I know little about. During the show, one of the contestants mentioned it was happening in the U.S. in ’08, and upon looking into it we found it’ll be in
Chicago, in March. If you’re in that area it might be a fabulous time if it’s open to the public.
Harlo then pointed me toward a book of images entitled Hair Wars by photographer David Yellen that captured the Detroit hair competitions I spoke of in my previous post. They are out-of-this-world in the best possible way.

To our families and friends who have been trying to reach us-we are OK here in Minneapolis. The cell phones aren’t working much because they’re jammed and the Internet connection is spotty-but since I was able to get on right now I thought I’d post this.
